The recent tragic murders of three children in Southport have been heart-breaking and devasting to hear about. Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones. Equally distressing is the subsequent racist behaviour and violence that has taken and continues to take place. These events remind us of the precarious position of Muslims and those from other racialised minority groups in the UK. The scapegoating and racist attacks are a sad reminder of the differential treatment these groups receive. When a perpetrator is White and British, we do not see similar abuse, violence and blame directed towards all White British people. To all our fellows from racialised minority groups, we see you and we understand the increased pressure you are under, especially given your role as social workers supporting others in the community. If you are feeling particularly concerned, please check in with your manager about what additional support they might be able to provide. Options to consider might include exploring joint visits, risk assessing personal safety during home visits, increased check-ins with your manager, identifying a buddy or setting up a peer support group. If you have not previously engaged with our racialised minority group or racialised minority men group on the community platform, you may find them helpful to connect with others who are processing recent events. If you are not from a racialised minority group, you will know that this is an especially difficult time for colleagues and families you are working with who may feel heighted vulnerability in their daily activities. Check in with them and let them know you stand with them.
